1900年1月6日20時のロンドン。夕食に招待された知人たちの前に、ホストである発明家ジョージ(ロッド・テイラー)がボロボロの格好で遅れて部屋に入ってきて、ここ1週間に起きた出来事を語り始めるというオープニングで始まります。1週間前の大晦日にもジョージは知人たちを自宅に呼んでいて、タイムマシンを発明したことを打ち明けて、ミニチュアを時間移動させる実験を目の前で成功させますが、何かのトリックだと言って親友デヴィッドさえも信じてくれません。すでに実物大のタイムマシンを完成させていたジョージは単身で乗り込み、未来へと旅立っていき・・・
