작은 마을을 떠날 계획을 세운 십대는 애니와 벤이 도망쳐 결혼합니다. 하지만 애니의 부모님이 결혼을 무효화하면서 그들의 대도시 계획은 중단된다. 벤은 뉴욕으로 이사하고, 애니는 가족을 돕기 위해 아이오와에 남는다. 15년 후, 두 사람 모두 각자의 약혼자와 약혼한 상태였으나, 결혼 무효가 최종 확정되지 않았다는 사실을 알게 된다. 그들은 이혼을 합법적으로 하기 위해 재회하지만, 만약 그랬다면 어땠을까 하는 추억을 시작한다. 로맨틱한 감정이 다시 떠오르자, 애니와 벤은 과거의 사랑이 미래의 사랑이 될 수 있을지 결정해야 한다.
