공군 출신의 리처드 블래니는 일하던 술집에서 해고되자 친구 밥 러스크에게 신세 한탄을 늘어놓는다. 리처드는 결혼 중개소를 운영하는 전 부인 브렌다를 찾아가는데, 두 사람은 또 다투고 만다. 그런데 리처드가 브렌다를 만나고 간 후 브렌다가 살해된 채 발견된다. 브렌다가 일련의 연쇄 살인의 피해자들과 같은 방법으로 참혹하게 살해되자 경찰은 리처드를 연쇄 살인범으로 보고 그를 뒤쫓는다. 할리우드에서 활동하던 히치콕이 아주 오랜만에 영국으로 돌아와 만든 스릴러.
