Bedarbis bulvarinių skaitalų rašytojas Holly Martinsas atvyksta į pokario Vieną, karą laimėjusių sąjungininkų suskirstytą į sektorius. Ten atsargų trūkumas išaukštino juodosios rinkos klestėjimą. Jis atvyksta pakviestas buvusio mokyklos draugo Hario Laimo, kuris jam pasiūlė darbą, tačiau sužino, kad Laimas neseniai žuvo eismo įvykyje.
