„Makenos auksas“ perkelia į 1872-ųjų Arizoną. Šerifas Makena (Gregory Peck) patenka į apačių vado pasalą. Prieš mirtį indėnas patiki Makenai seną žemėlapį, kuriame nurodyta Auksinė lyguma – čia paslėptas legendinis apačių lobis. Makena sunaikina žemėlapį, bet netrukus šerifą pagrobia banditas Koloradas (Omar Sharif), kuris nužudys teisėjo dukterį, jei Makena nenuves jo į Auksinę lygumą. Prie banditų prisideda vis nauji lobių ieškotojai, bet ne visiems pavyks pasiekti tikslą.
