Juosta – tai Nelsono Mandelos autobiografinės knygos „Ilgas kelias į laisvę“ adaptacija. Filmo pradžioje paauglys Mandela ruošiasi dalyvauti gimtojo kaimo ritualinėse apeigose ir jau tuomet atsiskleidžia jo tvirta asmenybė. Penktajame dešimtmetyje jau advokatas Mandela (už šį vaidmenį britų aktorius Idrisas Elba buvo nominuotas „Auksinio gaublio“ premijai) džiaugiasi geru gyvenimu Johanesburge, tačiau nenumaldomas pyktis dėl šalyje vykdomos rasinės segregacijos politikos įkvepia jį pasipriešinimui. Išsikovojęs įtakingą galią Afrikos nacionaliniame kongrese Mandela aršiai kovoja su apartheidu, tačiau nuteisiamas kalėti iki gyvos galvos. Dvidešimt septyneriems metams atskirtas nuo pasaulio Mandela nepraranda ryžto. Jis tiki, kad vieną dieną taps šalies lyderiu ir pakeis tautos mąstymą, kuris įkvėps visą pasaulį.
