2019-ieji. Miestai atgyja į gatves nusileidus sutemoms, o pagrindiniai jų gyventojai – vampyrai. Žmonių Žemėje belikę ne daugiau nei 5% ir jie priversti slėptis. Jei žmogus patenka į vampyrų rankas, jis tuoj pat patalpinamas kraujo banke, kur iš jo pamažu pumpuojamas kraujas tol, kol nelaimėlis mirtinai nukraujuoja.
Tačiau vampyrų pasaulį ištiko krizė. Jie beveik išnaikino žmones, o kraujo bankuose atsargų liko keletui mėnesių.
Vampyrų mokslininkų komanda stengiasi išrasti sintetinį žmonių kraujo pakaitalą. Galbūt jis – vampyrų problemų sprendimas. Šiai komandai vadovauja jaunas mokslininkas Edvardas.
Jie stovi ant atradimo slenksčio ir rodos tarptautinė maisto tiekimo problema netrukus bus išspręsta. Tačiau Edvardo padėtį komplikuoja tai, kad jis prijaučia žmonėms. Jis laikosi „dietos" – Edvardas negeria žmonių kraujo.
