Po demobilizacijos Danila Bogrovas grįžta į gimtąjį miestą. Nuobodus provincijos gyvenimas netenkina tvirto rusų vaikino ir jis nusprendžia vykti į Peterburgą, kad išmėgintų save. Juo labiau, kad, sprendžiant iš gandų, ten jau senai klesti jo vyresnysis brolis.
