Ferdinando Grifono (Jeanas Paulis Belmondo) santuoka nepavykusi. Be to, neseniai jis buvo atleistas iš darbo televizijoje. Apsilankęs vakarėlyje ir prisiklausęs lėkštų diskusijų, Ferdinandas nusprendžia pabėgti iš Paryžiaus su vaikų aukle ir buvusia meiluže Marian (Anna Karina), palikdamas žmoną su vaikais, ir toliau gyventi buržuazinį gyvenimą. Atsekęs Marian į jos butą, vyras randa lavoną ir greit suvokia, jog moterį persekioja slaptosios armijos organizacijos (OAS) nariai. Pjero (taip vadina Ferdinandą meilužė) ir Marian keliauja prie Viduržemio jūros mirusio vyro mašina, pakeliui įvykdydami ne vieną nusikaltimą. Jie gyvena netradicinį gyvenimą ir nuolat nuo ko nors bėga.
