Maksas ir Leonas yra vaikystės draugai. Prasidėjus Antrajam pasauliniam karui, vaikinai turi eiti tarnauti į kariuomenę, kaip ir daugelis jaunuolių 1939 metais. Draugai sugalvoja pasiutusiai nerealų planą, kaip iš fronto grįžti į namus keliaujant per įvairias pasaulio šalis. Kiekvienas bandymas pabėgti įtraukia juos į eilinius nemalonumus ir nusviedžia į visai kitas vietas nei planuota. Taip jie aplanko Didžiąją Britaniją ir Afriką.
