2000 m. rugpjūčio 10 dieną vienas didžiausių Rusijos povandeninių laivų „Kurskas“ išplaukė į karines pratybas Barenco jūroje. Rugpjūčio 12-osios rytą, dviejų minučių intervalu, laive nugriaudėjo du sprogimai, kuriuos išgyveno 23 jūreiviai iš 118 žmonių įgulos. Tačiau dėl lėtos Rusijos vyriausybės reakcijos ir nenoro priimti užsienio šalių pagalbą, siekiant išsaugoti karines paslaptis, išgyvenusių ir dėl savo gyvybių iš paskutiniųjų kovojusių jūreivių laukė dar šiurpesnis likimas. Po savaitės į „Kurską“ pagaliau įsigavę Norvegijos narai gyvųjų jame neberado.
