„Kelyje“ Federico Fellini samprotauja, ar žmogaus likimas yra nulemtas iš anksto. Ieškantis pagalbininkės savo pasirodymui cirkininkas Dzampano nutaria įsigyti Dželsominą – naivią merginą, savo elgesiu primenančią Charles‘o Chaplino filmų personažus. Nepaprastai nuoširdų ir emocionalų vaidmenį suvaidino režisieriaus žmona Giulietta Masina. Kartu jie rengia pasirodymus gatvėje, bet šią keistą sąjungą sunku būtų pavadinti laimingą. Dzampano nesibodi pakelti prieš ją ranką bei nuolat flirtuoja su kitomis moterimis, tačiau, kad ir ką jis bepadarytų, Dželsomina nesiryžta jo palikti. Paaiškinti Dzampano motyvaciją jos draugijoje irgi nėra lengva, tik filmo pabaigoje jam lemta suprasti, kad prarado vieną brangiausių jo likimo kelyje sutiktų žmonių.
