Jaunutė meno koledžo studentė Kendi įsimyli bohemišką poetą Deną. Meilė svaigina, pasaulis atrodo tobulas. Visiško užsimiršimo ir ekstazės pora siekia vartodama heroiną. Narkotikai nugramzdina į saldų sapną, nutrina ribas tarp realybės ir svajų.
Tačiau netrukus jiems tenka palikti svaigulio kupiną iliuzinį rojų – narkotikams nuolat trūksta pinigų, tad nematydama kitos išeities, Kendi pradeda verstis prostitucija.
Denas neprieštarauja, nes nebegali gyventi be kasdienės dozės. Dabar jų vienintelis rūpestis – kaip prasimanyti šlamančių dar vienai pražūtingo preparato porcijai ir dar kartą gurkštelėti iš gyvenimo šaltino.
Nei vedybos, nei Kendi nėštumas nepadeda atsikratyti priklausomybės nuo narkotikų. Abudu lekia į juodąją bedugnę, akimirksniu praryjančią ir neviltį, ir neaprėpiamą liūdesį.
