Džonas Šaftas – bebaimis Niujorko policijos detektyvas. Visuomet vilkintis juodą odinį apsiaustą Džonas Šaftas nepripažįsta jokių autoritetų, ginčus linkęs spręsti kumščiais ir todėl dažnai konfliktuoja su kolegomis. Atvykęs į nusikaltimo vietą, Džonas Šaftas nė kiek neabejoja, kad tai garsėjančio žiaurumu rasisto Valterio Vadeo rankų darbas. Vienintelė Džono Šafto viltis - baro padavėja, kuri matė kaip baltaodis rasistas turtuolis užmušė tą juodaodį smūgiuodamas per galvą su beisbolo lazda.
