Laiminga ir linksma Kameronų šeima, gyvena Pidmonte, Pietų Karolinoje. Šeimos name nuolat girdisi vaikų juokas. Šioje šeimoje penki vaikai - trys stiprūs berniukai ir dvi žavingos mergaitės. Pas Kameronus atvyksta seni draugai iš Pensilvanijos, deputatas Ostinas Stounmenas su dukterimi Elze ir dviem sūnumis Filu ir Tetu. Po atvykimo, vienas deputato sūnus Filas įsimyli Margaretą, vyriausiąją daktaro Kamerono dukrą, o Bendžaminas įsimylėjo Elzę, pamatęs tik jos nuotrauką. Tačiau prasideda Pilietinis karas tarp Šiaurės ir Pietų, jis supriešina amerikiečius, skirtingose pusėse atsiduria ir Kameronai bei Stoumenai. Benas Kameronas vis dar jaučia draugiškus jausmus Stoumenui, bet tiesa svarbiau už draugystę. Kartą jis pamato, kaip keli baltaodžiai berniukai gąsdina juodaodį, apsigaubę paklodėmis. Tai duoda impulsą sukurti naują organizaciją, kuri kovotų už Ameriką. Benas Kameronas ne tik sukuria Kuklusklaną, bet ir tampa jo lyderiu, pasivadina Naujuoju drakonu.
