VII-as amžius. Britanijoje verda kovos. Po daugelio metų, pasitraukus Romos vietininkams, britų gentys pešasi tarpusavyje. Tuo netrunka pasinaudoti Airijos keltų karalius Dončadas, ketinantis užgrobti Britanijos salas. Dabar britų gentis gali išgelbėti tik lordas Markas – išmintingas ir toliaregis valdytojas. Jis siekia sujungti visus britus ir pasipriešinti Airijos savivalei gimtosiose žemėse. Marko įsūnis Tristanas – atsidavęs savo valdovui karžygys. Jis Marko paliepimu išvyksta į žygį prieš Dončado karius. Jaunasis karžygys mūšį laimi, tačiau priešai vaikiną nunuodija. Marko mylimą įsūnį ištinka koma. Bendražygiai, manydami, kad Tristanas mirė, pagal senovinį paprotį išplukdo valtele jaunojo karžygio kūną į jūrą. Dievai pasigaili Tristano ir po kelių dienų jūra išmeta valtelę į Airijos pakrantę. Tristanui pasiseka dar kartą – jo bežadį kūną suranda Izolda, karaliaus Dončado dukra, kuri apsiima jį gydyti.
