1464-ųjų metų Anglija, kur devynerius metus vyksta karas tarp dviejų šeimų, Jorkų ir Lankasterių, kurių simboliai - vienų balta, kitų raudona rožė. Jorkų šeimos atstovas, jaunas ir dailus Eduardas IV (vaidina Max Irons) karūnuojamas Anglijos karaliumi, padedamas suktojo Lordo Varviko "Karalių rinkėjo" (James Frain). Bet Eduardui įsimylėjus ir slapta vedus jauną nekilmingą našlę, Elžbietą Vudvilę (Rebecca Ferguson), Varviko planai valdyti sostą sužlunga. Vudvilė tampa karaliene su motinos burtininkės Džeketos (Janet McTeer) pagalba. Elžbietos nuožmiausia priešininkė - ištikima Lankasterių atstovė Margarita Beaufort (Amanda Hale) - palūžusi ir pamaldi moteris, kuri yra pasirengusi paaukoti savo gyvybę, kad jos jaunasis sūnus Henrikas Tiudoras užimtų sostą. Kita svarbi moteris - Ana Nevilė (Faye Marsay), Lordo Varviko duktė, kurią jis panaudoja kaip įrankį savo mūšyje dėl valdžios, ištekindamas ją už karaliaus jaunesniojo brolio Ričardo, Jorko hercogo (Aneurin Bernard).
