Istorija prasideda 2033 m., kuomet į misiją Marse išsiunčiama pirmoji astronautų grupė. Misiją į kosmosą finansuoja dvi viešo ir privataus sektoriaus įmonės: Marso misijos korporacija, 2022 metais inicijuota kosmosą tyrinėjančių įmonių asociacija, kurios būstinėje Londone kuriamos technologinės programos, ir Tarptautinis Marso mokslo fondas, įsteigtas planuojamai ekspedicijai. Erdvėlaiviu „Dedalas“ vykusi pirmoji astronautų komanda sėkmingai pasiekia Marsą ir įkuria operacijų bazę - Olympus miestelį. Netikėtai kaimynystėje išsilaipins komerciniais tikslais atskridusi naudingų iškasenų ieškotojų komanda, finansuojama „Lukrum Industries“. Lengva nuspėti, kad įvyks ne tik dviejų stovyklų TMMF komandos ir „Lukrum“ susidūrimas. „Lukrum“ grąžtai iš Marso gelmių iškels ten tūnojusias bakterijas, nuo kurių pradės mirti pirmieji Marso kolonizatoriai.
