1880. Brits-Indië. Robert Case, een luitenant van een halfbloed, wordt ten onrechte ontslagen uit het Britse leger. Hij sluit zich aan bij het offensief van de rebelse Bengaalse stamleden tegen de koloniale vijand. Ze arresteren een buitenlandse journalist en Case vertelt zijn verhaal over valse beschuldigingen op basis van verzonnen beschuldigingen, op instigatie van de onverdraagzaamheid en het racisme van zijn bevelvoerende officieren. Na een succesvolle aanval van de Britten op de rebellen wordt Case brutaal neergeschoten door kolonel Drewe, zijn aanklager. De journalist keert terug naar huis, vastbesloten om het waargebeurde verhaal van de Brigand van Kandahar te vertellen.
