Når Rubys foreldre blr drept i en bilulykke, blir hun og broren Rhett overlatt til foreldrenes beste venner, Erin og Terry Glass. De blir Ruby og Rhetts verger, og lover dem et godt liv i trygge og velstående omgivelser under Californias sol. Alt de trenger å gjøre er å flytte inn i Glass-familiens vakre hus i billedskjønne Malibu.
