I COLD MOUNTAIN følger vi de sammenflettede historiene til tre personer som alle har mistet sine røtter som følge av krigen. Tre personer hvis fysiske og sjelelige overlevelse viser seg helt avhengig av hverandre. Først møter vi sørstatssoldaten Inman (Jude Law), som krigsskadet kjemper seg over landjorden til en nasjon i krig med seg selv og hjem til kvinnen han elsker. Drevet av minner på sin ferd mot sin elskede Ada (Nicole Kidman), støter Inman på slaver og opprørere, han styrer unna soldater og dusørjegere og finner uventede venner og farlige fiender hvor han enn snur og vender seg. Samtidig må Ada, preget av tro og nyfunnet mot, gå en vei som slett ikke er noe enklere.
