Tim Robbins er Jacob Singer, en mann som lever i et mareritt. Etter å ha blitt såret i Vietnam er han nå hjemme i New York City. Han rives mellom minnene om sin sønn og skrekkinnjagende krigsdemoner, og gradvis mister Jacob taket på virkeligheten. Hans vakre kjæreste (Elisabeth Pena) skaper bare mer forvirring i hans liv idet hun drar ham med i et nett av seksuelle intriger. Til slutt viser det seg at hans venn Louis (Danny Aiello) er den eneste Jacob kan regne med.
