Svartedauen herjer i Europa på 1300-tallet. Ridderen Antonius Block og hans væpner Jöns er på hjemvei etter et langt og slitsomt korstog til det hellige landet. Et dagsritt hjemmefra møter ridderen Døden, men klarer å forhandle seg til en livsfrist gjennom et parti sjakk. Med døden til enhver tid i hælene, treffer Antonius på Jof og Maria og sønnen deres, Mikael, som er en del av en omreisende gjøglertrupp. De byr ham på markjordbær og melk i en skoghelling, og Antonius opplever en fredfylt tid. Han beslutter så å ofre sitt eget liv for å redde gjøglerfamilien.
