MARLON BRANDO yter en av de sterkeste skuespillerprestasjoner som noen sinne er sett på det hvite lerretet, en prestasjon som innbrakte ham en Oscar i 1954 for Beste Skuespiller, og filmen en for Beste Film. Den tidligere bokseren Terry Malloy (BRANDO) kunne vært en mester, men nå sliter han for bossen Johnny Friendly (LEE J. COBB) på den gangsterstyrte havnefronten. Terry begynner å bli plaget av dårlig samvittighet da han forårsaker en opprørsk arbeiders død. Men det krever Edie Doyles (EVA MARIE SAINT) kjærlighet, den døde arbeiderens søster, å få Terry til å innse hvor dypt han har falt. Da Terrys kriminelle bror Charley the Gent (ROD STEIGER) blir myrdet på brutalt vis, fordi han nekter å drepe ham, bestemmer Terry seg for å begynne sin egen kamp for å knuse Friendlys gangstervelde.
