År 198 i solæraen i Tokyo kjemper spesialbrannkorps mot et fenomen kalt spontan menneskelig forbrenning, hvor mennesker blir forvandlet til levende infernoer kalt "Infernaler". Mens Infernals er første generasjons tilfeller av spontan menneskelig selvforbrenning, har senere generasjoner evnen til å manipulere flammer samtidig som de beholder menneskelig form. Shinra Kusakabe, en ungdom som fikk kallenavnet Djevelens Fotavtrykk for sin evne til å tenne føttene sine etter eget ønske, slutter seg til Special Fire Force Company 8, som består av andre flammebrukere mens de jobber med å slukke alle Infernaler de møter. Idet en fraksjon som skaper Infernals dukker opp, begynner Shira å avdekke sannheten bak en mystisk brann som forårsaket familiens død for tolv år siden.
