Rok 1942, niewielkie miasteczko w Czechosłowacji. Tono Brtko (Jozef Króner), ubogi stolarz, dzięki wpływom swojego szwagra i zarazem faszysty (František Zvarík) przejmuje niewielki sklep, położony przy głównej ulicy. Jego chciwa żona Evelyna (Hana Slivková) widzi w tym szansę na zyskanie fortuny. Społeczność żydowska, która wspiera ją finansowo, oferuje stolarzowi pieniądze w zamian za udzielenie jej pomocy. Tono zaprzyjaźnia się z panią Lautmanovą, pomaga jej w sklepie i naprawia meble.
