August Dupin po przejściu na wcześniejszą emeryturę zwyczajnie się nudził, nie mogąc robić tego, co lubi najbardziej - tropić przestępców. Jednak pewnego dnia narzeczony jego córki zostaje oskarżony o morderstwo - jest to dość kuriozalna sprawa, gdyż dotyczy zabójstwa pani L'Espanaye i jej syna - bestialsko rozszarpanych we własnym, zamkniętym od środka mieszkaniu... Teraz Dupin wraz z dawnymi podwładnymi muszą pomóc Adolfowi Le Bonowi, gdyż w Paryżu nie ma nikogo innego kto chciałby się podjąć tej tajemniczej sprawy. Film jest dość wierną adaptacją opowiadania Edgara Allana Poe pod tym samym tytułem. Warto dodać, że Arthur Conan Doyle, tworząc postać Sherlocka Holmesa, wzorował się właśnie Auguście Dupin.
