W jednym ze współczesnych miast szerzy się epidemia ślepoty. Próby znalezienia odpowiedniego leku kończą się fiaskiem, gdyż każdy kontakt z zarażonym powoduje utratę wzroku. Władze miasta podejmują decyzję, by chorych umieścić w opuszczonym szpitalu psychiatrycznym, a następnie poddać ich kwarantannie. Sytuacja z godziny na godzinę staję się coraz bardziej napięta. W szpitalu dochodzi do zamieszek, którymi dowodzi jeden z pacjentów. Naocznym świadkiem wydarzeń jest żona chorego lekarza, która udaje ociemniałą, by być blisko męża.
