Scenariusz powstał na podstawie wspomnień doktora Drauzio Varelli, który przez 14 lat pracował w nieistniejącym już zakładzie karnym Carandiru w Sao Paulo. Naoczny świadek opisuje koszmar codziennego życia w piekle, jakim było to przerażające miejsce. Nieludzkie warunki, niebywałe zatłoczenie i brutalne prawa, narzucone przez przestępczą elitę, doprowadziły w konsekwencji do tragicznych wydarzeń. W 1992 roku Carandiru stało się areną najbardziej krwawego buntu więźniów w historii.
