Jest 31 grudnia. W Detroit szaleje zamieć śnieżna. Policjanci przygotowują się do likwidacji położonego na uboczu posterunku policji. Ich dowódca Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke), przyjmuje ostatnie zadanie: przetrzymać przez 24 godziny aresztowanego króla przestępczego podziemia Mariona Bishopa (Laurence Fishburne) i jego ludzi. Noc zapowiada się raczej spokojnie, ale to tylko pozory. Gdy zapada zmrok posterunek zostaje otoczony przez grupę uzbrojonych przestępców, którzy chcą dopaść Bishopa. Wszelka łączność jest odcięta. Jedyna szansa by obronić posterunek to zjednoczyć siły z Bishopem i jego ludźmi.
