Black Books gira em torno do carismã de temperamento ruim e excêntrico dono de livraria, Bernard Black. A devoção de Bernard aos prazeres gêmeos da embriaguez e do antagonismo voluntarioso aprofunda e enriquece tanto sua vida quanto a de Manny, seu assistente.
