Won Fei Hung este un tânăr pus pe șotii, fiu al maestrului unei școli de arte marțiale. După ce din cauza poznelor lui este rănit fiul unui potentat local, tatăl său cere ajutorul unui unchi sadic pentru a-și învăța fiul ce înseamnă autodisciplina. Acesta are reputația că își schilodește elevii și încearcă să îl învețe pe Fei Hung un stil bizar de kung fu. La început, Fei Hung opune rezistență, dar, după ce pierde o luptă cu un asasin local, care fusese angajat să îi ucidă tatăl, își dă seama că trebuie să ajungă să stăpânească arta specială a „pumnului beat”.
