În 1879, britanicii au pornit lupta împotriva războinicilor zulu din Africa de Sud, așteptându-se ca armatele lor utilate și bine pregătite să nu aibă prea multă bătaie de cap în această zonă. Astfel, o armată de aproximativ 1350 de soldați a fost trimisă împotriva a 4000 de luptători zulu. Dar britanicii au fost complet anihilați, iar la finalul bătăliei războinicii zulu s-au mutat înapoi. Pe parcursul zilei și în noaptea de miercuri, 22 ianuarie 1879, dar și în dimineața următoare, au lansat atac după atac împotriva micii garnizoane, dar nu au putut să doboare apărarea, așa că s-au retras.
