Cinci studenți la medicină vor să treacă ultima graniță și să experimenteze moartea. Nelson este primul. După un minut este reînviat de ceilalți. Când povestește despre călătoria sa cu fascinație, ceilalți se lasă în călătoria în viața de apoi. Dar Nelson nu spune totul: de la experiment a fost bântuit de o – foarte reală – fantomă a trecutului; băiatului Billy, pentru a cărui moarte era vinovat. În timp ce ceilalți se pot descurca cu spiritele „lor” aici și acum, Nelson pornește din nou singur în călătorie.
