James Clayton (COLIN FARRELL) poate cã nu se comportã ca un "recrut" obisnuit. Dar este cel mai destept absolvent de studii superioare din tarã, iar Walter Burke (AL PACINO) îl vrea pentru Agentie. James priveste CIA ca pe o alternativã interesantã la o viatã banalã. Dar pînã sã devinã un adevãrat ofiter de informatii, "recrutul" trebuie sã supravietuiascã unor metode drãcesti de antrenament. Pe mãsurã ce Burke îl învatã regulile jocului, James îsi gãseste timp si dispozitie ca sã se îndrãgosteascã de o colegã de curs, Layla (BRIDGET MONAHAN). Dar curand vine si ziua în care Burke îi "serveste" prima misiune: sã gaseasca un informator infiltrat in Agentie.
Pe parcursul antrenamentului sau si a noii misiuni incredintate, el afla ca nimeni nu este ceea ce pare, iar totul poate fii doar un joc, o incercare de a testa noile "achizitii" ale Agentiei...
