Povestea începe în ultima zi din prima misiune cu echipaj uman pe Marte, echipaj ce descoperă elemente fosilizate ale vieții bacteriene. Dar expediția lor neautorizată duce la un dezastru atunci când unul dintre membrii echipajului cade într-o prăpastie și toată lumea își dă seama că forma de viață pe care au descoperit-o ar putea fi cu totul altceva.
