Allegra Geller, cea mai bună creatoare de jocuri din lume, testează noul joc virtual, eXistenZ, în cadrul unui grup de test. De cum începe jocul, ea este atacată de un asasin fanatic ce folosește o bizară armă organică. Allegra reușește să fugă cu un tânăr trainer de la marketing, Ted Pikul, care devine bodyguard-ul ei. Din nefericire, teaca ei, un dispozitiv organic ce conținea singura copie a jocului, este deteriorată. Evenimentele îi conduc printr-o mulțime de aventuri ciudate unde realitatea și acțiunile lor sunt imposibil de determinat nici măcar din perspectiva jocului.
