Robert Rainsford, un celebru vanator si autor de carti despre vanatoare, se afla la bordul unui vas de croaziera impreuna cu niste prieteni, discutand despre vanatoare si diferenta dintre oameni si animale, cand vasul respectiv se loveste de stanci.
Initial alaturi de Robert mai sunt doi supravietuitori, dar acestia sunt mancati de rechini. Robert va ajunge inot la mal, pe o insula pe care exista o singura locuinta- castelul contelui Zoroff. Acesta este un emigrant rus fugit din tara dupa izbucnirea revolutiei. El locuieste impreuna cu servitorii sai, dar in momentul in care Robert ajunge acolo mai avea doi musafiri, fratii Eve si Martin Trowbridge, care naufragiasera cu ceva timp in urma.
Robert va afla de la Eve ca impreuna cu ea si fratele ei mai fusesera inca doi marinari care disparusera de cateva zile, Zoroff spunand ca cei doi au plecat la vanatoare.
