După moartea părinților lor într-un accident de mașină, Ruby (Leelee Sobieski) și fratele ei mai mic, Rhett (Trevor Morgan), sunt încredințați unor prieteni de familie, Erin și Terry Glass (Diane Lane și Stellan Skarsgård). Intențiile cuplului Glass (“sticlă”) nu sunt însă nici pe departe la fel de transparente ca pereții somptuoasei vile de sticlă în care trăiesc. Deși fac totul să îi răsfețe, nu după multă vreme, Ruby îi suspectează pe Erin și Terry că pozează în tutori grijulii și dezinteresați ca să pună mâna pe cele 4 milioane moștenire. Mai mult, după ce pune cap la cap fragmente de conversație surprinse din întâmplare găsește motive să creadă că “adopția” a fost plănuită înainte de accidentul părinților ei. Dar nu se grăbește să arunce piatra. Căci ce nu vezi în casa cu pereți de sticlă te poate ucide...
