Filmul prezintă atrocitățile comise de naziști în Bielorusia și Ucraina. În timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial, doi băieți găsesc o pușcă în nisip, simbol de o greutate deosebită, în apropierea satului lor. Unul din cei doi, Floria, va pleca a doua zi cu partizanii bolșevici, care se pregătesc pentru un atac împotriva germanilor. Alături de aceștia, va cunoaște ororile războiului și grozăviile făcute de naziști.
