Suntem în secolul al XIX-lea, în Franța, iar Emma, o fată de la țară, se căsătorește cu Charles Bovary, un bărbat înstărit. Mai repede decât și-ar fi imaginat, ea se plictisește de viața pe care o are acum, dar și de soțul său, așa că începe să privească în jur după altcineva. La început, tânăra are o relație cu Rodolphe Boulanger, un proprietar de pământuri, apoi cu Léon Dupuis, un student la Drept. Timpul trece, iar Emma începe să facă datorii din ce în ce mai mari. Decisă să țină toate astea departe de soț, Madame Bovary cere ajutorul foștilor amanți.
