În 1682, Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet), artistă peisagistă talentată primește o invitație neașteptată: este chemată la curtea regelui Ludovic al XIV-lea (Alan Rickman), unde urmează să se facă selecția pentru cel care avea să amenajeze grădinile principale ale noului palat al regelui Soare de la Versailles. Impresionat de ideile lui Sabine, renumitul artist peisagist André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) o alege pe aceasta, deși era femeie, în detrimentul altor candidați. Sub presiunea timpului, ea își trasează propriul ritm, iar Le Notre ajunge să aprecieze “micul haos” care se declanșează odată cu angajarea acesteia.
