Iarnă 1997, Amarillo, Texas. Brian Deneke este cunoscut pentru creasta lui verde și pasiunea pentru muzica punk. El cântă alături de prietenii lui într-un local dărăpănat cunoscut ca „Bomb City”. Brian, alături de mulți alți „punks”, refuză să se conformeze la cultura conservatoare care îl înconjoară. Înfățișarea lor radicală stârnește ura comunităților și, mai ales a lui Cody Cates, un licean care face parte dintr-un grup cunoscut ca „white-hatters”. După ce pierde un meci de fotbal, Cody și alții din grupul lui au o altercație cu niște rockeri. Acest conflict provoacă o serie de întâlniri ostile între cele două grupuri, iar totul se termină într-o seară cu o violentă luptă de stradă. În scurt timp, evenimentul din respectiva seară va deveni cunoscut ca una dintre cele mai controversate crime provocate de ură din cultura modernă americană. Filmul este bazat pe o poveste adevărată.
