In februarie 2001, Robert Hanssen, agent de 25 de ani in FBI, este arestat pentru spionaj. Cu doua luni in urma: Eric O'Neill, un specialist in calculatoare care vrea sa fie agent, primeste sarcina sa fie asistentul lui Hanssen si sa-si noteze tot ce face acesta. Lui O'Neill i se spune ca aceasta este o investigatie asupra inclinatiilor sexuale ale lui Hanssen. In cateva saptamani, scortosul Hanssen, un catolic devotat, se deschide catre O'Neill, care ajunge sa-l respecte. Sotia lui O'Neill respinge atitudinea prea insistenta a lui Hanssen - miza profesionala si cea personala ajung mai sus. Cum il prind pe Hannsen si de ce acesta spioneaza devine povestea filmului. Poate O'Neill sa gaseasca dovezi contra "celui mai rau spion din istorie" si in acelasi timp sa-si pastreze aproape familia?
