Inspirat de evenimente adevărate și cu acțiunea întinzându-se de-a lungul a trei perioade din istoria germană, filmul spune povestea lui Kurt, un tânăr student la Arte, care se îndrăgostește de colega lui Ellie. Tatăl lui Ellie, profesorul Seeband, un doctor faimos, nu este mulțumit de alegerea fiicei lui și jură să distrugă relația celor doi. Ceea ce nimeni nu știe este că viețile lor sunt deja interconectate prin intermediul unei crime teribile pe care Seeband a comis-o cu ani în urmă.
