Amadeo este un călău bătrân în pragul pensiei. O asociație de locatari îi oferă un apartament unde va putea trăi cu fiica sa, Carmen, care tocmai s-a măritat cu José Luis, angajat la o firmă de pompe funebre. Contractul pentru locuință e condiționat de angajarea drept călău, așa că Amadeo va trebui să-l convingă pe José Luis să-i moștenească „profesia“. José Luis acceptă, cu condiția să-și dea demisia dacă va trebui s-o și exercite în fapt. Viața curge liniștită până când, într-o bună zi, vine vestea că José Luis va trebui să-l execute pe un condamnat la moarte. Amadeo își liniștește ginerele convingându-l că până la urmă va sosi grațierea.
