Marianne și Jean-Paul își petrec vacanța într-o superbă vilă de lângă Saint Tropez, a cărei piscină constituie cadrul de desfășurare a acțiunii.
Cei doi sunt anunțați prin telefon că va veni în vizită un vechi prieten comun de-al lor, Harry, împreună cu fiica lui de 18 ani, Penelope. Cei doi îndrăgostiți s-au cunoscut chiar prin intermediul lui Harry, acum câțiva ani. Situația devine însă tensionată, întrucât Jean-Paul este gelos pe Harry, care a avut în trecut o relație cu Marianne.
Vorbind cu Penelope, Jean-Paul aflaăcă Harry ar avea încă sentimente pentru Marianne, acesta pretinzând ca ar putea să ii despartă pe cei doi oricând și să se împace cu Marianne. Venind acasă de la o petrecere la care a băut prea mult, Harry se ceartă cu Jean-Paul, acuzându-l pe acesta că este mult prea apropiat de fiica lui. Discuția se termină tragic...
