Micuța Paulette își pierde ambii părinți în cursul unuia dintre bombardamentele din iunie 1940, asupra centrului Franței. Fetița de 5 ani e găzduită de către o familie de țărani, cu al căror fiu - Michel, 11 ani - se împrietenește. După ce îl înmormântează pe cățelușul lui Paulette, ucis și el în bombardament, copiii alcătuiesc un adevărat cimitir al animalelor, pentru ale cărui morminte minuscule Michel începe să fure cruci din cimitirul satului.
