20 de voluntari acceptă să participe la un experiment aparent bine plătit, promovat de universitate. Se presupune că este vorba despre comportamentul agresiv într-o situație artificială de închisoare. Un jurnalist bănuiește că în spatele anunțului se ascunde o poveste și se strecoară printre subiecții testului. Aceștia sunt împărțiți aleatoriu în prizonieri și gardieni. Ceea ce la început pare un joc se transformă curând într-o situație extrem de gravă.
