David Helfgott este un pianist înzestrat. Dar talentul său promițător n-a atins niciodată culmile pe care specialiștii - inclusiv tatăl său - se așteptau să le atingă. Shine este pe alocuri, asemeni unui accident de mașină filmat cu încetinitorul, aproape prea dureros. În copilărie, David a fost considerat cel mai talentat pianist al generației sale. Talentul său s-a ofilit însă sub formidabila presiune exercitată de tatăl său, un om care și-a pierdut ambii părinți în camerele de gazare și care fără îndoială își iubește copilul, dar nu are nici cea mai mică idee despre cum poate să-l înțeleagă și să-i canalizeze talentul. Greșelile tatălui distrug însă cariera incipientă a fiului său.
